Snow.

And more snow.

Kestrel stood in the mouth of the rock shelter and studied the hazy white veil that wavered and flowed across the horizon. Winter Boy had returned with such strength that he amazed her. In the windless morning, the flakes seemed to fall in slow motion, like goose down suspended on the breath of a warm updraft. The Mother, as Sunchaser called the ocean, lay calm and quiet beneath, her voice a bare whisper of waves, as though she still slept. The smooth surface of the water reflected the gray, opalescent sheen of the stormy air.

Kestrel filled her lungs, enjoying the tangy scent of salt mixed with the musk of the shoreline. Damp scents of earth, vegetation and smoke blended, breathing a new life into her soul.

Kestrel’s fingers moved absently over the seashells that covered the front of the shirt Sunchaser had given her. He stood so much taller than she that the fringes on his shirt fell to below her knees. She’d cut off two hands’ worth of leather from the sleeves so they would fit.

Made of fine mammoth hide with a wealth of beautiful shells that even Lambkill would have envied… and Sunchaser simply gave it to me.

Kestrel had risen at the same time as Sunchaser, two hands of time ago. While he had gone searching the forest above for Spirit Plants, she’d located a rill of snowmelt cascading down the rock. She’d bathed in that icy splash and washed
